The Manhattan Transfer - Live Christmas

Live in Concert Manhattan Transfer Live Christmas with an orchestra- 2008. The current group was founded in 1972 by singers Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, Laurel Massé and Tim Hauser. Performances at Max's Kansas City, Trude Heller’s and Reno Sweeney in New York City soon brought them a cult following, and it was at the latter venue that Ahmet Ertegün, founder and chairman of Atlantic Records, saw them and offered a recording contract which led to the release, in 1975, of their first album under the new line-up, The Manhattan Transfer. The album included the group’s first hit single, the gospel tune "Operator".

The group soon did very well in Europe, where the next two albums, Coming Out and Pastiche, brought a string of top 10 hits. One was a revival of Wayne Shanklin's "Chanson D'Amour", which went to number one in the UK in 1977 but failed to chart in the US. These hits were followed by a live album, The Manhattan Transfer Live. It was recorded in the UK and captured the group's great popularity in Europe at that time. Immediately after that album was recorded, in 1978, Laurel Massé was badly injured in an auto accident and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne. The line-up has remained the same since then.

This Christmas Album is so wonderful to watch and listen. The selected Christmas songs are just perfect for the Holidays! Who else can beat Manhattan Transfer when it comes to Acapella. The blending of their voices is just awesome! Merry Christmas to ALL!

Jim Hall Trio (Jim Hall, Scott Colley/Bass, Lewis Nash/Drums, Kenny Barron/Piano, Dave Holland/Bass) Marciac Jazz Festival, France - 2009

Superbly supported by Scott Coley on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, Jim Hall, a true living legend of the guitar. The interpretation of "All The Things You Are" is astonishly amazing. The rest of the concert was an inspirational, very melodic and harmonics are very fine. The piano playing of Kenny Barron (In A Sentimental Mood) and Dave Holland was splendid. Excellent piano guitar duet display. Jim Hall's playing is still as accurate as ever. This concert is a success to every guitarist dream.

Jamie Cullum - The Pursuit - 2009

2009 album from the multi-talented British Jazz man, vocalist, pianist and songwriter. This album contains tracks spanning across the Pop, Hip Hop and Jazz genres, including the lead single 'I'm All Over It', an outstanding take on Rihanna's 'Don't Stop The Music' and the spectacular ballad 'Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down' as well as many more. Cullum mixes Jazz with melodic Pop and Rock into a crossover style that calls to mind such artists as Harry Connick, Jr., and Norah Jones. In that vein, Cullum will just as often cover a swinging Jazz standard as a modern Rock song, and his original compositions deftly move from earnest ballads to songs of sardonic wit.

Natalie Cole - AVO Session, Basel, Switzerland - October 31, 2009

Maybe the most exciting music the famous Swiss festival AVO Sessions in Basel. Now more highlights of the Natalie Cole concert was shown here. Selections were carefully picked by Natalie herself.

Natalie Cole was in rare form in this concert in Basel. She had several Grammy's, multiple hit albums. With this record Natalie showed signs of real musical maturity.

The Song "Unforgettable" the earliest evidence of Natalie's trademark versatility, ("Unforgettable" is a song duet along with his Father Nat King Cole built in virtual viewing)as well as her skill at leaning toward jazz. The "Unforgettable" has since become a classic, with Natalie singing the praises of love and affection in all their glory. She really wraps herself around the lyric and gives it her all, pushing the song to a level she rarely reached after that.

Peter Cincotti - Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland - 2009

Peter Cincotti seemingly walked out of another time, that long-ago era when crooners with smooth matinee-idol looks donned tailored suits, wore gleaming pinkie rings and jazzed up romantic pop fare. He's an old-fashioned cosmopolitan singer-musician -- cool and elegant with a swaggering, Sinatra-inspired approach that belies his 21 years.

Peter Cincotti was already a seasoned pro on the New York jazz circuit. He made a splash at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, had played prestigious rooms in the Big Apple and Atlantic City, N.J., and had shared the stage with his mentor, Harry Connick Jr.

At 19, Cincotti topped Billboard's traditional jazz charts, becoming the youngest artist to do so. Now,Cincotti steps out of the tuxedo-and-evening gown realm of jazz standards and snazzy crooning and plunges headfirst into the aggressive world of pop-rock. This concert lasted for 1 and half hours of pure Cincontti's jazz or pop rock music.

John Pizzarelli Trio Forum, 16. Leverkusener Jazztage, Leverkusen/Germany, October 1995

John was taught to play the four-string tenor banjo by his great-uncles, Pete and Bobby Domenick at the age of six. He began playing a six-string guitar at the age of ten. A self-taught guitarist, John now plays a 7-string Moll guitar handmade by Bill Moll of Springfield, MO. The 7th string is tuned to A' which allows him to play a bass line to his own solos. The son of legendary 7-string guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, John was exposed at a very early age to the great music of the jazz era, from Erroll Garner and Les Paul to Django Reinhardt. He also played trumpet in his high school band. But he sang in rock bands in high school, and admired Billy Joel. One band was called, he says, "Johnny Pick and His Scabs"! Pizzarelli remembers playing paying gigs with his father and then rushing over to New York clubs to join his rock band. At the age of 20, Pizzarelli performed his first professional jazz gig in February of 1980, at New York University's Loeb Student Center with Zoot Sims and Bucky Pizzarelli. This led to a professional association with Bucky that continues to this day. While accompanying his father, John was introduced to the music of Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole and to songwriters such as Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn, George Gershwin, Harry Warren, Harold Arlen and others. But it was Nat Cole's style and songbook, which influenced John the most.

John developed his first trio with Ken Levinsky on piano and Martin Pizzarelli on bass. Then in 1993, John met pianist Ray Kennedy, a former St. Louisian, and along with double-bassist brother, Martin Pizzarelli, the John Pizzarelli Trio was formed. This same year they received the honor of opening for Frank Sinatra on touring dates throughout the United States and Europe. From 1992 through 2000 Mr. Pizzarelli had the opportunity to tour and record with legendary vocalist, Rosemary Clooney. Pizzarelli's eclectic -recording career has teamed him with artists such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Tom Wopat, Rikki Lee Jones, George Shearing, Ray Brown, Dave Von Ronk, Johnny Frigo, Stephane Grappelli and Harry Allen among others. The Pizzarelli trio regularly performs with symphonies and pop orchestras from the New York Pops to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Stan Getz and Chet Baker - Live at Stockholm, Sweden - 1983 - 2009 release

The pairing of Stan Getz and Chet Baker in 1983 at Stockholm, Sweden for an LP and video release seemed like such a natural thing, both being golden boys enjoying their heydays with lyrically clean, brilliant solo styles. So it is odd that they teamed up in this concert only one other time, twenty-five years later, in their long careers. Which makes this a summit meeting to savor. Their playing on "I'll Remember April" is a study in contrasts: Getz's long lines against Baker's shorter phrases. Baker delivers his best solo here, keeping to a medium tempo, while Getz gives all his best performances in all tunes with furious tempo.

1. We'll Be Together Again (Fisher-Laine) 8:03
2. I'll Remember April (DePaul- Johnston-Raye) 11:41
3. Just Friends (Klenner-Lewis) 8:42
4. My Funny Valentine(Rodgers-Hart) 8:33
5. Sippin' At Bells (Miles Davis) 9:04
6. Blood Count (Billy Strayhorn) 5:25
7. Milestones (Miles Davis) 9:44
8. Airegin (Sonny Rollins) 9:04
9. Dear Old Stockholm (Traditional) 5:50
10. Line For Lyons (Gerry Mulligan) 2:04 -- --Tracking

Chet Baker and Stan Getz first recorded together in 1953. They would be reunited three decades later for a world tour. The performance presented here took place during the tour's stop in Stockholm, Sweden. 10 tracks. Ohvation.

One Night Only Barbra Streisand and Quartet at The Village Vanguard, New York, USA, September 26,2009 - 2010 release

Whether it was nostalgia or just a great idea to promote her new record with Diana Krall, Barbra's one night at the Village Vanguard, a 123-seat, 74-year-old jazz club in Greenwich Village, captures an intimate example of her ability to connect with an audience. I live in NYC, but wasn't lucky enough to attend. However, I got to see Ms. Streisand in 2006 at Madison Square Garden and was front and center as a kid at Arizona's Sun Devil Stadium in March 1976 when she put on a one-day concert event to film for her "A Star is Born," film. In both cases, the audience of thousands just shut up and listened when she sang. In the case of Sun Devil Stadium that included a lot of drugged out teens and adults there to rock out to Peter Frampton and other acts.
Here she scales back her famous voice and personality to fit the venue and gives back to her fans a sample of what it was like in the early '60s to have heard her sing in one of the many nightclubs around the US where she got her start. Along the way, she covers a few of her standards, but more importantly some others that are not so famous, but equally great. "Spring is here," which she once sang on the Tonight Show is a highlight. Just a beautiful song of hope, love and loss. She's in great voice here and hits some amazing notes. If she misses a couple of others, who cares? She certainly goes for it on several songs like the "Way We Were." That's part of the experience of seeing someone live. I think it's good she didn't clean everything up too much in post-production. And what makes her so great is her ability to act songs.
Along the way, she introduces the rich and famous who attended, along with the lucky contest winners. This include President Clinton, his wife, our Secretary of State, Nicole Kidman, SJP, Donna Karan, and her husband, James Brolin. She also introduces or is introduced by, a lot of people who where or are old friends and have stayed with her for almost 50 years. One of the things that comes across about Ms. Streisand is her incredible loyalty to the people who are loyal to her. She doesn't say much about it, but she also uses her talent and resources to support multiple charitable causes through her own foundation. She puts her money where her mouth is. No matter what you think of her politics, Barbra Streisand tries to make the world a better place. If we were all as socially conscious, the world would be a much better place.
So, if you're just a casual fan thinking this might be a boring paint-by-numbers event that was thrown together to promote her album, you'd make a mistake not to buy it. It's just like being there in the audience. It was a master-stroke by Ms. Streisand to do this and making things that are old entirely new again. Oh, and she also looks nice.
And to the person who said her husband looks bored - sorry, I honestly don't know what you're talking about. An amazing young actor named Ashton (HBO's The Pacific, and A History of Violence) Holmes sits to his right during the performance, by the way.
Overall, the evening presents an eclectic mix of people and songs. The star likely planned it that way and comes up with something her fans will love and even casual fans will really enjoy. Now, if she will just consider making another movie or two worthy of her great talent ... :)

Carole King and James Taylor Reunion - Live at the Troubadour - Los Angeles, USA - 2007

.
Carole King and James Taylor landmark "Troubadour Reunion" tour, comes to a close tonight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Since the tour kicked off on May 7th in Portland, OR, the "Troubadour Reunion" has been one of the musical events of the summer selling out venues and earning rave reviews from fans and critics alike. In addition, the chart topping CD/DVD Live at the Troubadour from Hear Music/Concord Music Group debuted at #4 on Billboard's Top 200 and remained in the Top 10 for 5 consecutive weeks.

Carole King and James Taylor have reflected on this very special collaboration. Carole told the New York Times, "It's like we went away and had a lifetime of performing and experience, and now we're getting together... But I don't think we would have wanted to wait a whole lot longer than doing it now. This was the time to do it." James added, "Carole said something interesting early on. She said, 'Not only do you want to leave the people wanting more, you want to leave yourself wanting more.' That's really wise. It's smart to know when to quit."

Live at the Troubadour has sold over 400,000 units since its release and shot back to the #1 spot on Amazon.com last week following a feature story on King and Taylor that aired on NPR's "All Things Considered."

Recorded in November of 2007, Live at the Troubadour captures Taylor and King, as well as members of their renowned original band (guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) historic reunion to mark the revered nightclub's 50th anniversary - the sight of the duo's first and now legendary early 70's performances. The CD/DVD features hits and fan favorites including King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as Taylor's "Carolina In My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire And Rain," to name just a few.

They have created some of popular music's most indelible songs, music that resonates across generations. The "Troubadour Reunion" tour has given fans an incredible opportunity to see them together along with their legendary band, vocalists Kate Markowitz, Arnold McCuller, Andrea Zonn (also on violin) and Robbie Kondor on Keyboards/piano/accordion Robbie Kondor.

Michel Camilo Trio -Internationale Jazzwoche,Burghausen, Germany - 2008

An exciting and high-powered virtuoso pianist, Michel Camilo came from a very musical family (with all nine of his uncles being musicians). Originally playing accordion, he switched to piano when he was 16. After moving to New York in 1979, his song "Why Not?" became a hit for the Manhattan Transfer and caught on as a standard, and "Caribe" entered the repertoire of Dizzy Gillespie. Camilo, who worked with Paquito d'Rivera's band for three years (cutting an album with "Why Not?" as the title cut), recorded for Electric Bird (sessions reissued by Evidence) and Columbia, and worked as a leader beginning in the mid-'80s. He has released numerous albums under his own name, including Spirit of the Moment in 2007. ~

Karrin Allyson - Live at XI Festival de Jazz, San Javier, Spain - 2008

She is right up there among today's female jazz artists. A natural feel for the jazz classics which is obviously her passion including the bossa novas. This is a great introduction to Karrin's music. This concert in Spain finally gives Karrin Allyson the big-time recognition she has so long deserved. She has come fully into her own with this gorgeous selected songs from her differrent studio CD recordings.

Karrin's intelligent musicianship and pristine ear are evident throughout, and though her physical vocal range is rather limited, she surprises the listener with some of the most beautiful and perfectly placed high notes you're likely to hear on any vocal jazz recording. Her husky timbre will remind you of a sax at times, and if you would listen to every songs in this concert. You'll be amazed with her capabilities, every tune required an incredible amount of vocal skills. Karrin's emotional interpretations are sensitive and mature as well. Karrin Allyson is a great place to start - she has arrived, at last, into the upper echelon of the finest vocalists in the jazz business.

Ivan Lins - Live at Festival Internacional Jazz, San Javier, Spain - 2007

Ivan Guimarães Lins, 16th June 1945, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, the son of a Naval engineer, Ivan (pronounced E-von) spent several formative years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while his father completed graduate studies at M.I.T.

Relocating to his native Brazil, Ivan earned a degree and had a career in professional sports in mind before discovering his passion and natural talent for music.

Among his earliest compositions, 'Madalena,' was recorded by the legendary Brazilian artist Elis Regina and was an enormous hit in that country and throughout Europe.

In the early 1980's, the enduring love affair between American and Brazilian musicians took a new turn when it was announced that super-producer Quincy Jones was looking for a special Brazilian touch on an upcoming album for jazz guitar great George Benson.

It was percussionist Paulinho da Costa who introduced Quincy to Ivan's music. The result was 'Dinorah, Dinorah', a Lins original that was included on Benson's million-selling 'Give Me the Night'.Knowing a good thing when he heard it, Quincy tapped Ivan for his ground breaking album, 'The Dude'.The tune this time around was 'Velas', which gathered a Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance. While the two cuts served as an introduction for American audiences, they were only a sign of things to come.

Lins' material began appearing on a number of albums by top recording artists, among them Manhattan Transfer whose aptly titled 'Brazil', featuring two Lins originals, earned a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, while Quincy's own multi-Grammy-winning 'Back on the Block' highlighted yet another Lins composition, "Setembro".

More recently, trumpet player Terence Blanchard devoted the bulk of his new 'The Heart Speaks' to Lins compositions with Lins sitting in on piano and vocals. In 1987, Lins was recruited by producer Stewart Levine to work with crossover giants The Crusaders. The album, 'Life in the Modern World,' contained two Lins originals and set the stage for Lins' US debut.

The tracks featured were the title track and 'Some People Never Learn'. Working closely with producer Levine, Lins began writing with American audiences in mind, collaborating with lyricists Brock Walsh and Brenda Russell, among others. The result was 1989's 'Love Dance,' featuring Lins singing in English for the first time.

That album was followed in 1991 by another Levine-produced recording, 'Awa Yio' (roughly 'we go'), on which he returned to his native Portuguese. A superstar in his native Brazil, Lins' kind of music -- romantic pop, mostly -- has not typically been associated with the radical politics of many of his Latin compatriots.

He has appeared on Toots Thielemans' recordings of 'Brazil 1 and 2' and has appeared live with him. 'Anjo de Mim', his 1995 release in Brazil, has been repackaged for his American tour as 'I'm Not Alone' with the addition of the three new songs in English: 'I'm Not Alone (Who loves you?)', 'Remember Me' and 'You Came' with English lyrics by songwriters Will Jennings, Brenda Russell and Norma Winstone respectively.

Still earning tremendous international respect, Lins has been recorded by many American stars, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, Patti Austin, Take Six, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin and Sergio Mendes.Like most Brazilian artists, Lins has had to deal with pressures from the Brazilian military regime of the last two decades.

Yet luck has been on his side, for he has never had a song cut out or censored. However, he admits that 'when you are suffering, your art takes on greater density.'

James Taylor - Live at North Sea Jazz, Rotterdam, Netherlands - 2009

James Taylor is a man from another era. Together with Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Cat Stevens and others, he used to impress with craftily written songs at the beginning of the 70s. But Taylor was something else; his voice truly grabbed you. That inviting, somewhat drawling, sonorous voice touched many a tender spot. Today, Taylor is still the same intelligent, cautious and warm man. Exactly like in his pictures and performances. In the 70s, he experienced some difficult times but he never belied his distinct style. The man from North Carolina has been very productive these last years and his latest outburst is his album Covers from 2008, which is filled with his favorite songs. Taylor is a superstar, but it isn't something he enjoys. 'I have a lot of good friends, such as Neil Young and Bob Dylan. They all say they dislike the fuss, but I know better than that. They thrive in the limelight; I only thrive with my guitar in my hands.' This time he brings along a line-up of pure top-of-the-bill artists, truly a Band of Legends. He is accompanied by the legendary drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Jimmy Johnson, keyboardist Larry Goldings and guitarist Michael Landau.

Line-up:

James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Caroline Taylor, Kate Markowitz, Arnold McCuller (vocals); Andrea Zonn (vocals, fiddle); Michael Landau (guitar); Larry Goldings (piano); Jimmy Johnson (bass); Steve Gadd (drums).

North Sea Jazz Festival - Rotterdam, Netherlands - 2009

A unique, historic festival! The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 in the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague. Some numbers in those early days: six venues, three hundred artists and about nine thousand visitors. In this very first festival year internationally renowned jazz legends performed, such as Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, as well as most Dutch avant-garde artists.

In the intervening years, the North Sea Jazz Festival has developed into a major international jazz event. Over the years the numbers have increased to: fifteen venues, approximately thirteen hundred artists and a visitors number that varies between sixty-five thousand and seventy thousand every year. Since 2006 the festival has found a new and more spacious location: Ahoy Rotterdam.

North Sea Jazz is known all over the world because of the many musical genres it has to offer, ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde jazz and electronic jazz; to blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. All of which are presented during a single weekend: 9, 10 and 11 July 2010.

Besides familiar names like Nat Adderley, Erykah Badu, Paul Anka, Steve Coleman, Miles Davis, Candy Dulfer, Ibrahim Ferrer, Ella Fitzgerald, Alicia Keys, Lionel Hampton, Al Jarreau, B.B. King, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Jamiroquai and The Zawinul Syndicate, the North Sea Jazz Festival also gives young talent a chance to make it on a major stage. Some names of artists who were introduced to a European audience: Shirley Horn, Tania Maria, Roy Hargrove and Rachelle Ferrell. The entire 3 day concert were nicely edited for shorter viewing and compressed into 2 dvd's. A rare oppurtunity to watch the gathering of the most influential jazz artists of todays modern jazz. This video was broadcasted in High Definition format through satellite viewing in Europe.

This is what makes North Sea Jazz so unique – a festival where for three days - the past, the present and the future of jazz music are presented, all under one roof.

"George Duke Trio featuring Chaka Khan and Rachelle Ferrell" replaced "Randy Crawford and Joe Sample Trio" at North Sea Jazz 2009. Unfortunately, Randy Crawford had a high fever that time and didn't make it at all.

George Duke Trio with Chaka Khan and Rachelle Ferrell need not have any introduction anymore because they are well known jazz artists as well.
The combination of Chaka and Rachelle were a perfect match for George Duke and his band. The concert turned out to be a successful one. If you have a thirst of watching these 3 clever jazz
